Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
