An extensive extended journey around the Land Down Under is being halted in the wake of the fatal incident of an elderly lady who was left behind by the cruise liner on a distant island.

The elderly woman had been trekking on Lizard Island with shipmates from the vessel, but separated from the party for a break. The liner departed without her and went back after some time after the ship staff realised the lady was unaccounted for.

A major search operation found her remains the following day.

Authorities are examining the tragedy, in coordination with law enforcement and the official investigator.

The CEO of the voyage organizer stated that passengers and personnel on the vessel were informed that the remainder of the journey had been called off due to the "tragic passing and earlier engine troubles".

In a statement, he mentioned that guests would be issued a full refund, and said the operator was working "to organize the homeward trips of the passengers via specially arranged planes".

Officials also issued an revised communication, and said they had "provided a directive to the Commander" preventing any further travelers from boarding the ship.

The official said that they would inspect the liner in Cairns upon its arrival.

Chronology of Events

The vessel initially left Cairns on October 24th, and was only 48 hours into the expedition at the time of the elderly woman's death. Lizard Island was the opening port on the itinerary.

Guests on the vessel - who usually pay substantial amounts of dollars to join the voyage - were ferried there for a day trip with the possibility of walking or snorkeling.

The child of the elderly passenger said that her family was "shocked and grieved that the liner left the location after an organised outing without my parent".

In her statement, she portrayed her mother as an "energetic octogenarian" who was a member of a walking organization.

"According to scant facts we have been provided, it appears that there was a breakdown of responsibility and basic judgment," she mentioned.

She added that she hoped the inquiry would be able to identify what "the company should have undertaken that might have saved Her existence".

"According to reports from the investigators that it was a very hot afternoon, and mum took sick on the uphill trek," she revealed.

"She was asked her to return, without accompaniment. Then the ship left, reportedly without conducting a headcount.

"At some stage in that sequence, or soon after, she died, without company."

Company Response

Via official communication, the Head affirmed that the operator was "cooperating fully with officials to support their examination".

He stated that the firm was "very regretful that this has transpired" and had offered its total backing to the loved ones.

Shipping Sector Procedures

The vessel caters for up to 120 travelers with 46 crew, according to official details. It was purpose-built to access isolated regions of the Australian coastline and is equipped with "small boats" - compact vessels used to ferry passengers on day excursions.

Incidents of this nature are rare, and cruise ships have protocols to document which individuals are boarding or disembarking, according to maritime specialists.

"Leaving covertly or [back] aboard really isn't an option," one expert commented.

Shipping companies consider these processes extremely carefully and have "advanced technology in place to prevent such occurrences from occurring," the specialist continued.

"This appears to be probably a shocking - and sad - single occurrence."
