Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
