Several Injured as Turbulence Impacts Delta Plane Landing at Sydney

Multiple passengers and crew sustained injuries following a Delta flight originating in LA to Sydney was hit by turbulence on Friday morning.

Delta Flight 41 "encountered brief turbulence" as it landed at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson stated. A number of the onboard staff were injured.

Local paramedics said they evaluated five individuals, and transferred a trio to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that such as spinal discomfort and migraines. The patients' ages ranged from their thirties and seventies.

The event represents the latest incident of commercial jets being hit by atmospheric disturbance, with experts pointing out that global warming is a key driver.

There were 245 people and a crew of 15 on the Airbus A350, the official said, stating that the plane touched down "safely" at Sydney Airport at 6:48 a.m. local time on Friday morning.

Paramedics reported they were alerted just three minutes ahead of the plane arrived, and emergency vehicles were waiting on the tarmac.

Recently, travelers and staff on a Singapore Airlines jet experienced a frightening short but intense period of extreme instability. A traveler died and many were hurt, as unbelted passengers lifted out of their seats and crashed back down.

Turbulence is a common occurrence during flights, and while cases of strong or severe turbulence seem to be rising, they are statistically infrequent.

Research indicates that there are around thousands of instances of severe-or-greater turbulence every year, out of a sum of in excess of 35 million aircraft departures that now take off around the world.

Intense turbulence is defined as when the up and down movements of a aircraft experiencing disturbed air generate more than a significant G-force on your body - enough to propel you from your seat if you did not have on a seatbelt.

As a changing climate modifies atmospheric conditions, specialists caution that flying could become less smooth: shifts in temperature and changing jet streams in the jet stream level are likely to boost the regularity and severity of significant turbulence.
