The White House confirmed the start of government employee layoffs on Friday, making good on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for terminating staff.

While Vought did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a DHS representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by the public and pledged to contest the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to the public across the country,” stated a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.
