Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to contest specific calls made by the official, echoing the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
