Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
